FORMAL STRATEGY

BODY SCAN

In MBSR, the first formal strategy that is introduced is the body scan. It is a way of bringing awareness to the sensations of the body. Typically, the body scan is done lying down, but you can also do it sitting in a chair. You can start at either the tips of your toes or the top of your head and work your way up or down the body. Whenever you notice your mind wander off, bring it back to the sensations in the body on whatever area you were focusing on. You can do anything from a 5-minute to a 45-minute scan. I find it especially helpful to use audio while doing a body scan. Check out the Resources section for recommendations.
